ANALYSIS OF TASK 3

KEMI AJAYI

I enjoyed carrying out this task as it was interesting to research into a subculture that I had grown up with. I looked into the scene kid subculture and it was interesting to find out the backlash it had faced in certain Islamic countries as it was deemed inappropriate, especially for young boys as it was seen as a homosexual fashion. But as with the tasks I am still having trouble knowing how much research to carry out but when my work has been uploaded to my groups’ website, the people that I am working with seem happy with what I have done. Also, due to the fact that we have another time consuming and demanding project, I have put this one on the backseat and have not been as focused on it as I would like to have been. However each task has been done on time to the best of my ability.

JESSICA STAINES

This task was the most complex to date, in terms of the layers if information that all influenced each other. This particular task also highlighted the group’s diverse tastes and personal influences. In the initial research and when choosing the three style tribes, the suggestions were very diverse in both their style and the decades in which the style tribes were active. We all agreed we wanted a variation and to have a personal interest in the style tribe we were researching. We split up the three tribes so that two pairs shared the load of two tribes and one person took on the remaining tribe. Each person in the group chose the style tribe they researched which meant the research would be more enjoyable and interesting for us all. For this task, external factors such as the overall workload of the course influenced my ability to spend as much time on the task and meet the deadline agreed by the group.

ELISSA BARBER

The third task we were assigned was to look into style tribes; we chose 'Mods', 'Scene Kids', and 'Essex boys'. I was working alongside Kemi researching 'Scene Kids' to discover what their typical appearance would be and how they differentiate against other similar style tribes such as 'Emos'. Before I started researching, my knowledge on 'Scene Kids' was pretty weak, I had seen people associated in some form with this tribe but I wasn’t aware of the difference between them and 'Emos'. From my understanding, the 'Scene Kid' appearance is heavily important in order to be considered as part of this tribe; other factors such as hobbies and interests seem to be less so. It interested me to find out that a tribe so similar to another can have a completely different reasoning behind it, for instance I found an 'Emos' emotions and hobbies was what made them a part of the tribe and they reflected these through their style naturally rather than 'scene kids' who I felt were the opposite and focused on dressing just to stand out. Overall, I wouldnt describe researching this as my favourite task as 'Scene Kids' arent a style tribe im particularly interested in. It was quite difficult to find out from a reliable source their particular style and how it was influenced.

MEGAN McROBERT

I enjoyed this task as it was interesting to look into style tribes which I was not too familier with such as 'scene kids' and 'mods'. Jess and I looked more into Essex Boys which I found quite amusing. I'm not sure this was my favourite task though, I didn't feel very engaged with it, this may have been because of other things going on, other work or just felt almost like there wasn't any point in it as we weren't getting any feedback from the work and overall nothing comes from each task.

KATHRYN SPARKS

When this task was given I immediately thought of mods and put it to the group that I could research this. I have always been well aware of this style tribe due to many conversations I have had with my dad about when he was younger and also after recently visiting The Jam exhibition in London I already had a better understanding of their style. This task was also good for discussion and everyone was confident in what they wanted to research for the other style tribes, which were then split up so we could go and do individual research.
